Posted on August 30th, 2010 No commentsMen’s Fraternity – “The Quest for Authentic Manhood“
After a very successful year, the Men’s Fraternity will be back again this Fall. Men’s Fraternity provides men with an encouraging process that teaches them how to live lives of authentic manhood as modeled by Jesus Christ and directed by the Word of God. All men are invited to join us once again for this awesome adventure. Our meeting time will be Tuesday, 6:30 am and sessions will begin on September 21.
Join us on Saturday, September 18th for the Second Annual Grillin & Chillin from 4-7pm at Redland Baptist Church. This event is the kickoff for our Men’s Fraternity and a great way to meet and fellowship with other men who will be embarking on this quest together. Feel free to join us and if you have any questions Click Here and send an email to Pastor Bobby.

Check out this doctor’s advice for taking care of yourself when you have a cold or the flu. Is there a prescription that will help?
Read Matthew 5:44 to find the prescription for treating hatred. How should we deal with an enemy?
Prayer: Lord, thank you for being with us when we face difficult times and difficult people. Even when it seems that things are beyond our understanding, we know that you are in control and that you will give us an extra measure of love for those who call themselves our enemies.

Check out the lists of organizations that advocate peace. Some are local. Others are national and even international in their scope and outreach. Are you familiar with any of them? Next consider what you can do to promote peace in your corner of the world.
On a sheet of paper, draw a vertical line down the center. On one side, write the heading “Actions” and on the other side, write “Words.” Encourage everyone to brainstorm ways to solve conflicts peacefully through actions and words, listing suggestions under the appropriate headings. Post the list in a prominent place so that it can be a reminder of God’s desire for us to get along with one another.

http://www.friendship.com.au/media/songs/sbestfriend.html
Consider the lyrics of this song. Have you ever had a friend who gave you a “helping hand” or was there for you “through thick and thin”?
http://www.friendship.com.au/media/songs/sfriends.html
Michael W. Smith and Debra D. Smith wrote a song about friends who share a faith in the Lord. The words promise that “friends are friends forever if the Lord’s the Lord of them.” What do you think that means?
http://www.christianet.com/bible/friendship.htm
Take the friendship quiz at this site to find biblical principles of friendship. How did you do?
As a family, make a list of things that are important to any friendship. Use the following Scriptures to guide you:
• 1 Samuel 19:2-6
• Proverbs 13:20
• Proverbs 17:17
• Proverbs 18:24
• Matthew 18:21-22
• 2 Corinthians 13:11
• Galatians 6:2

Discuss the quotations in these links. How did each one’s understanding of the phrase “great things” differ? Were any alike? How? What do you think it means to do great things?
Consider the story of David and Goliath. Then discuss the following questions as a family:
• Why was it a great thing for David to defeat the giant Goliath? How does David’s lack of stature and military ability show the power of God? Explain.
• Do you think God still uses people today to show his power? Explain.
• Can God use anyone to do great things? Can God use you? How?

Go to the Ask.com Web site and allow each family member to enter a question, word, or phrase in the “Ask” box. Click on the “Ask” icon, and then wait to see if the Web site will have an answer. Allow children to use the Ask for Kids URL.
Consider that while the Internet may contain extensive information, it doesn’t really know anything about you. Only an all-knowing God can look inside hearts.
Turn to 1 Samuel 16:1-13. In this passage, the prophet Samuel is following God’s direction to look for the next king of Israel. Read verse 7 aloud. God tells Samuel not to base his search on outward appearance, but to remember that God looks at a person’s heart.
Let each family member offer suggestions for what God might find when he examines hearts. How does the fact that God knows you so well make you feel? Is it exciting to know that God doesn’t care how we look? Our hearts are what matters to God.

http://www.englishrussia.com/?p=326
At this URL you will find the directions for building a house from matches. Give it a try if you like! Does it look complicated? What do you think of the old adage “Patience is a virtue”?
http://dev.origami.com/diagram.cfm
Go to this site to find directions for making origami figures from paper. As you scroll down, you will see links to directions for making angels, dinosaurs, airplanes, aliens, and flowers! Just click on the link to whichever one you choose to make. Don’t give up! Origami takes patience.
Ask a family member to read 1 Samuel 13:1-14. Saul didn’t wait for the prophet Samuel to arrive; instead, he decided to make the sacrifice himself. Saul made a mistake because he didn’t exercise patience. Considering what you have learned about patience, discuss these questions as a family:
• Do you worry about problems and sometimes take matters into your own hands instead of trusting God to guide you? Why can this lead to mistakes?
• Is trusting God difficult for you, especially when you must be patient for his answer to your prayers? Explain.
• Why is it important to be patient and trust God with your life? How can knowing you are following God’s plan give you peace?

Try the cooking exercise provided at this Web site. What might happen to the preparation of the food if you did not follow the directions?
Discuss what you learned from the activities. Then answer the following questions as a family:
• What can happen if you choose to ignore the directions given on a map or in a recipe?
• Would it make you more confident in following a recipe to know that the person writing the recipe is the one who created it? Why or why not?
• When you think about obeying (or disobeying!) God, do you consider that he is the creator of the universe and that he made you and has a plan for your life? If you did, would it change any of your life decisions? How?

Try any of the listening activities at these URLs. Then ask a family member to read 1 Samuel 3:1-21.
• What did you learn about listening from the activities at the various Web sites?
• What did Samuel learn from Eli about listening to God?
• Explain how God can guide and direct us when we recognize his voice and listen.
Ask family members to note on a small piece of paper an area of their lives in which they promise to listen for God’s guidance. Fold the paper, and tape it closed. Then trade papers with other family members, each person committing to pray for the need written on the paper without actually reading it. Remember, God knows the need; we don’t have to. Reassemble in a week and allow family members to share how God has led them. Rejoice in answered prayers.

http://www.depression-helper.com/depressioncure.htm
At this Web site you will find that the author believes the answer to sadness and depression is to choose to be happy. As a family project, make up a list of things that you believe will make you happy.
Ask a family member to read the story of Hannah in 1 Samuel 1:1-26. Hannah was unhappy because she wanted a son. When she gave her cares to God, he answered her prayers. She was so happy that she gave her son back to God!
As a family, review the list of things that you believe will make you happy. Then discuss the following questions:
• If God gave the things on your list to you, would you be willing to give them back to God? Why or why not?
• What relationship can bring happiness instead of sadness? How do you find that relationship? How did Hannah find it?
Prayer: God, thank you for caring for us when we are sad. You are everything that we might ever want. Nothing on any list that we might write can compare to the joy of having you as our Savior and best friend.
